Winnie The Pooh is a fat, lazy sonofabitch.
Am I the only one who changes the words when I’m reading a storybook to my kid? OK, so it’s not exactly going to promote early literacy, but it gets you through a story more quickly than the kid loses attention. Usually after about 15 seconds on a page, she’s grabbing for the next one. At this rate, we’ll go through about 10 books in a bedtime story session. Prolific!
I think I got a bit frustrated last night at one of our marathon bedtime sessions that my husband opted out on helping in. I swear if there’s something you can slip into your food that gets men to lactate, I’ll be the first one in line to buy it. But we’re pretty much stuck in the current ritual of story, nursing, story story, nursing… etc. Usually the kid passes out at the milk bar before I announce “last call,” but lately she’s been wearing me out and I think it may be getting to me.
It started at about book number 8, which went a little something like this:

After working in the garden all day, Rabbit comes home to eat dinner with Pooh and Piglet. As usual, Pooh has opened up a can of honey and set in on the stove, which is really nice and all, but rabbits don’t really want to eat honey every night. Still, it seems like the only thing that Pooh knows how to make, and Rabbit wants to provide a nutritious meal for her family - so guess who ends up fixing dinner?
Soooooo, now that Pooh’s had about 3 helpings, he’s waaaaaaay too tired to clean up. Never mind that Piglet just threw half of her noodles on the floor. “I’ll clean up in a minute,” says Pooh, “but I’m so full, I think I’ll relax a bit first.”
“yeah, right,” says Rabbit, who’s heard this a thousand times before and knows how it usually ends up:

So after cleaning up, Rabbit’s pretty sleepy herself, but is her day over? Nooooooo!
Guess who has to chase down Piglet, nurse her and read her about 400 books to get her to sleep? Meanwhile Pooh, the fat, lazy sonofabitch, is snoozing on couch - totally oblivious to how much freakin’ work Rabbit does around the house and doesn’t even show any appreciation. Pooh is most definately not getting any tonight! Not like Rabbit has to worry about that too much these days.

But after Piglet finally fell asleep, Rabbit starting thinking that maybe she’s a little stressed out running the -er- garden and all, and Pooh all-in-all is a good guy who’s working really hard at other things, and even though he’s not as tidy as Rabbit, and doesn’t cook as well as Roo, he takes really good care of Piglet.
But he’s still not getting any.
